Boeckel's 2020 Pinot Noir Les Terres Rouges comes from the heart of the grand cru Zotzenberg, more precisely from the Les Terres Rouges parcel (or Rotland in Alsatian), where the vines are over 50 years old and rooted in marl-limestone soils with iron oxides. This Pinot Noir from massal selections opens with a deep, very intense, concentrated and fleshy bouquet of ripe dark fruits, yellow fruits, mushrooms, game and crushed black pepper. Macerated with one-third whole clusters for two weeks and then aged in 20% new barrels for 20 months, this is a full-bodied and rich, very elegant, fresh and generous yet also refined and balanced Pinot Noir with fully ripe fruit, lots of fine and spicy tannins and a powerful, warming finish. The firmly structured wine has not just power and intensity but a characteristic terroir freshness thanks to the iron-rich soil and an altitude above 200 meters. This is impressive and characterful, with muscles and strength. Tasted at the domaine in November 2024.
The 2020 Pinot Noir Les Terres Rouges was harvested in the Zotzenberg. The color is very dark, but still comes with translucency; in this year, the vines were 50 years old. The nose is still a little reduced. The palate comes in with tension and velvety tannins, trailing a floral perfume amidst elegant and aromatic notions of red cherry and ripe mulberry—juicy, smooth, intense. The aromas are a little dense, but fine, silky structure makes this a total winner. Wonderful. (Bone-dry)
