The lightish and drinkable Monastrell 2019 Tragolargo is young and fruit-driven with varietal character, fine tannins and a slight rusticity in the palate that calls for food. It fermented with part full clusters from organically farmed and certified vineyards in Casa Balaguer and was bottled unoaked and without any added sulfur, yet the wine is clean, precise and expressive. It has 12.5% alcohol. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2020.
Vinessens, whose vineyards and wines include the old project from Rafa Bernabé, have been certified organic since 2019 (the vineyards were certified in 2015), and they have also moved to biodynamic farming. They have simplified their portfolio—it was too wide—and even reduced the land under vine, especially getting rid of varieties like Syrah and Tempranillo with the idea to plant more Monastrell, Garnacha Peluda, Arco, Rojal, Valencí, etc. They work a total of 62 hectares in three different zones of Alicante, including the natural park of La Mata. Production has been reduced from 300,000 bottles in 2018 (a very late harvest) to 200,000 in 2019, and the idea is to produce around 150,000 from 2020. After some ups and downs, they now seem to be fully on track.
